3 Ways to Celebrate Independence Day with Seniors

Schedule a Visit

The 4th of July is a favorite summer holiday to celebrate our freedom and honor those who have served our country. It’s also a perfect day to gather with family and friends to enjoy the great summer weather, food, and festivities. Here are 3 ideas to celebrate Independence Day with your loved ones in a senior living community.

Attend a local parade

Parades are a fun, carefree way to get in the festive spirit. Many senior living communities will provide group transportations for residents to local parades and events. If you or your loved one are headed to a local parade or festival, be sure to wear light colored clothing and bring water, sunscreen, and a hat to stay cool in the sun. You can also bring a comfortable lawn chair to help older adults avoid too much standing.

Take time to honor veterans

Independence day is a day to celebrate our country as well as those who bravely served. Take time to remember veterans by visiting a memorial, donating to charity, reflecting on memories with loved ones, or writing a thank you note to a member of the military.

Bring the celebration to them

Some older adults may have health or mobility issues that may limit their abilities to attend local parades or fireworks displays. If this is the case, include your loved ones in your festivities by bringing the party right to them. Whether you make red, white, and blue desserts or crafts, share memories, or watch a patriotic movie, there are many ways to adapt your activities to your loved one’s needs.

Watch fireworks

Of course, watching fireworks is another great tradition. There are several local fireworks displays to see all weekend long. If you go to watch live fireworks, be sure to bring a chair so your loved one can enjoy the display more comfortably. If mobility or transportation is an issue, don’t worry! You can watch fireworks shows broadcasted live on local TV channels or live streamed from the internet, enabling you and your loved one to celebrate from the comfort of your home or from a senior living community.
