Amber, Life Enrichment Coordinator for Cascade, recently started a new activity called “Learning Sign Language.”
The activity idea was born when Amber realized resident Irene was feeling left out of activities and conversations. Irene is deaf. Amber just knew all the other residents (and staff!) wanted her to be included.
“I looked up some basic signs online,”says Amber. She also purchased the book The Pocket Dictionary of Signing by Ron Butterworth. “While residents may not know all the signs, Irene is appreciative because they are trying,” adds Amber.
In fact, Irene leads the sign language classes. Now, she and the other residents are able to communicate a little more easily.
