The month of January gets its name from the Roman god Janus. This god (and notice that I have not capitalized the word “god” here) had two heads looking in opposite directions. This characteristic may be why Janus is associated with new beginnings.
Why do we need to look in two different directions with a new begin-ning? Well, we need to look to what’s behind us to see our patterns, our abilities, and what has and has not been working. We also need to look to what’s ahead of us so that we won’t stumble and fall as we face new challenges, and so that we can plan for any changes we may want or need to take.
Well, 2017 will be an exciting year for Bethany Village and there will be a lot of challenges for all of us. (There is a big construction project which is planned to begin in 2017!) So, just as Janus looks both ways, so we also look at our past, celebrate our success, and then look towards the future and a great year in 2017 and beyond.
Blessings in the New Year,
Pastor Bob Ashburn
