Managing Diabetes: A Healthy Diet
Doctors will equip diabetic and pre-diabetic patients with a range of methods to manage blood sugar. Methods may include prescription medication or an exercise regimen, but will almost certainly include a change in diet. One dietary resource Studer recommended was ChooseMyPlate.gov. This website is a government resource designed to help Americans eat well and take advantage of the latest in nutrition science.
One change the Choose My Plate program made over the outdated “food pyramid” is the elevation of fruits and vegetables to half of the diet in terms of portions. That is to say, when you sit down for a meal, half of your plate should be fruits and vegetables. The increase in these categories of foods has a direct relationship to managing diabetes because both fruits and veggies can be good sources of fiber.
